East Asia, the easternmost region of Asia, is defined both geographically and ethno-culturally. The modern states encompassed in East Asia are China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan. Additionally, Hong Kong and Macau, two small coastal territories in the south of China, enjoy a high degree of autonomy under Chinese sovereignty. The economies of Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau are among the largest and most prosperous in the world. East Asia shares borders with Siberia and the Russian Far East to the north, Southeast Asia to the south, South Asia to the southwest, and Central Asia to the west. The Pacific Ocean lies to the east, and Micronesia, classified as part of Oceania, is situated to the southeast.
The population of East Asia amounts to approximately 1.7 billion people, accounting for about 33% of the population in Continental Asia and 20% of the global population. The region is home to major world metropolises such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Osaka, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo. While the coastal and riparian areas of the region are densely populated, the landlocked areas of Mongolia and Western China have very low population density, with Mongolia having the lowest population density of any sovereign state. Overall, the population density in the region is 133 inhabitants per square kilometer (340/sq mi), roughly three times the world average of 45/km2 (120/sq mi).
In business and economics, “East Asia” sometimes refers to a broader geographical area covering ten Southeast Asian countries in ASEAN, Greater China, Japan, and Korea. However, in this context, Europeans use the term “Far East” to describe ASEAN countries and East Asian countries. It’s important to note that “Far East” is a Eurocentric term, referring to the region’s position relative to Europe rather than its location within Asia. Alternatively, the term “Asia Pacific Region” is often used to describe East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Occasionally, “East Asia” may include India and other South Asian countries not within the Pacific region, although the term “Indo-Pacific” is more commonly used for such a definition.
Some observers who prefer a broader definition of “East Asia” use the term “Northeast Asia” to specifically refer to China, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan, while Southeast Asia covers the ten ASEAN countries. This usage, seen in economic and diplomatic discussions, differs from the historical meanings of both “East Asia” and “Northeast Asia.” The Council on Foreign Relations of the United States defines Northeast Asia as comprising Japan and Korea.
